The personnel that I have seen in the local fire department with a few exceptions, seem to be a bit older. Also, I am told that many of the department's members are from out of town. Here is an article about a small town dealing with similar issues.
Recent Fire Has Officials Concerned
A fire this week in Eagle Harbor has some township fire officials worried about the future of their department. They've had a difficult time recruiting young firefighters in recent years. The average age of the 18 volunteers is 61.
Eight men responded to Wednesday's fire. It wasn't completely out until 10:30 at night, and 12-hour fires are exhausting.
According to township officials, a majority of the 450-acre township's population are retirees. That leaves them without younger residents who could join the department.
